Most structural components produced by stationary molding are iron-based. Powders are elemental, pre-alloyed or partially alloyed. Elemental powders, such as iron and copper, are easily compressed to relatively high densities, producing pressed bodies that are strong enough to be handled during sintering, but do not produce very high-strength sintered parts. Pre-alloyed powders are harder and less compressible, requiring higher pressing loads to produce high-density compacts. However, they are capable of producing high-strength sintered materials. Prealloying is also used when very high temperatures and long sintering times are required to produce a homogeneous material from elemental powders. Good examples are stainless steels whose chromium and nickel contents must be pre-alloyed for economical production by powder metallurgy.
Cold isostatic pressing
The metal powder is contained in an enclosure, such as a rubber membrane or a metal can, which is subjected to external pressure that is uniform in all directions. Since the pressure is isostatic, the pressure-bearing element has a uniform density. Irregularly shaped powder particles must be used to provide adequate green strength in pressed parts. It is then sintered in a suitable atmosphere to obtain the desired product.
Typically, this technology is used only for semi-finished products such as rods, billets, plates, and roughly formed parts, all of which require extensive secondary operations to produce accurately sized parts. Likewise, at economical operating pressures, the product is not dense and often requires additional processing such as hot extrusion, hot rolling, or forging to densify the material.
