Isostatic pressing is an important ceramic forming method. Ceramic products produced in this way range from spark plugs to large, 4,000-pound firebricks for the glass industry. Isostatic pressing means that the pressure applied to the object from all directions is equal, so that some problems caused by one-way pressure can be avoided.

Basic Overview The specific method of isostatic pressing is to fill a dry material (usually containing a small amount of binder) into a model made of rubber, urethane, polyvinyl chloride, or other compressible material, and then place it in a pressurized chamber and pressurize it with a gas or liquid medium.

After decompression and removal from the mold, the green body is repaired and then burned, usually without drying. By eliminating the drying stage, the stock of green billets can be reduced. Isostatic pressing is generally limited to the manufacture of a large number of small, complex shapes from fine-grained materials, such as tubes, rods, and spark plugs, or for the manufacture of products too large to be formed by other forming methods.

The isostatic forming method can replace the mud casting method for the production of fine grained dense refractory bricks for the glass industry. The choice of molding method mainly depends on the size and shape of the product, because no matter which molding method can achieve the same density, quality and resistance to glass erosion.

Die design and selection is another important problem of isostatic pressing. There are two types of molds: "wet bag" and "dry bag". Which one is chosen depends on the blank pressed. Although it is much slower to press with a "wet bag", this mold is adaptable and suitable for pressing a small number of large size or complex shape products. "Dry bags" are used for the mass production of small products of specific shapes and sizes.
