Classification and Characteristics of Isostatic Pressing

Isostatic pressing technology is a new type of powder forming and consolidation technology developed according to Pascal's principle. Pascal's principle is also known as the principle of static pressure transfer. The pressure will be transmitted to each point at the same time in equal value. Isostatic pressing technology was first developed by the Westinghouse Light Bulb Company in 1913. Since then, isostatic pressing technology and its application range have developed rapidly, and have been widely used in casting, atomic energy, plastics, graphite, ceramics, permanent magnets, biological Pharmaceutical preparation, food preservation and military industries.

Classification and characteristics of isostatic pressing technology

According to the temperature classification of sample molding and consolidation, isostatic pressing technology can be divided into three types: cold isostatic pressing, warm isostatic pressing and hot isostatic pressing.

Cold isostatic pressing technology refers to the isostatic pressing technology carried out at room temperature. Usually, rubber and plastic are used as the mold material, liquid is used as the pressure medium, and the pressure is 100~630MPa. It is mainly used for powder forming. Its purpose is to provide preforms for the next steps such as sintering, forging or hot isostatic pressing.

Warm isostatic pressing technology generally refers to isostatic pressing forming technology whose pressing temperature does not exceed 500℃. It uses special liquid or gas to transmit pressure, and the operating pressure is about 300MPa. It is mainly used for powder materials that cannot be formed at room temperature (such as Graphite, polyamide, rubber, etc.) pressing so that it can make a solid body at a higher temperature.

Hot isostatic pressing technology is a process technology that makes materials undergo isostatic pressing under the simultaneous action of high temperature and high pressure. Generally, inert gases such as argon and ammonia are used as the pressure transmission medium. The covering material is usually metal or glass. The range is 1000~2200℃, and the working pressure range is 100~200MPa. It is not only used for powder molding and sintering, but also for diffusion bonding of workpieces, elimination of casting defects, and production of complex-shaped parts.
