Cold Isostatic Pressing
A powder forming method in which a liquid (oil or water) is used to apply equal pressure in all directions to the powder or compact at room temperature, also known as water isostatic pressing, or CIP for short. According to the powder molding and compression form, it can be divided into dry bag isostatic pressing and wet bag isostatic pressing.
Dry-bag isostatic pressing (dry-bag isostatic pressing) is a cold isostatic pressing method in which a flexible soft bag filled with powder or compact is fixed in a pressure vessel. The mold for isostatic pressing of the dry bag is not immersed in the liquid medium, and the dry bag is fixed in the cylinder. The high-pressure liquid medium is injected into the container to generate pressure to uniformly press the powder in the soft bag. After pressing is stopped, the compact can be removed from the mold bag, which remains in the container for multiple uses. The process has a short production cycle, high productivity, easy automation, and long mold life. It is generally used for mass production of cermet products, such as spark plugs. The highly automated dry belt press opens up a wide range of applications for the isostatic pressing of metal powders with its fast and economical product.
Wet-bag isostatic pressing (wet-bag isostatic pressing) is a cold isostatic pressing method in which a flexible soft bag containing powder or compact is immersed in a pressure transfer liquid. The mold sleeve filled with powder and sealed is put into the pressure vessel, so that it is completely immersed in the pressure medium and subjected to the uniform pressing of the high-pressure liquid. The characteristic of wet bag isostatic pressing is that it can simultaneously press products of various shapes in the same pressure vessel. The mold has a long service life and low cost; however, the production cycle is long, and the charging and demolding time is long, which is suitable for large-scale, complex-shaped and small-scale production products.
