Powder Metallurgy

Powder metallurgy (Powder Metallurgy) is the process of using metal powder (or a mixture of metal powder and non-metal powder) as raw material, forming and sintering to manufacture metal materials, composite materials and various types of products. The powder metallurgy method is similar to the production of ceramics, so it is also called the cermet method. It can obtain products that cannot be obtained or are difficult to obtain by general smelting methods.

The powder metallurgy production process includes three basic parts: powder preparation, forming and sintering. Preparation of powder is to obtain metal or non-metal powder that meets the requirements through physical, chemical or mechanical methods, which is the first step in powder metallurgy.

The purpose of forming is to make a compact of a certain shape and size, and to make it have a certain density and strength. Forming methods are basically divided into two types: pressure forming and pressure-free forming. The most commonly used in pressure forming is compression molding, referred to as pressing. Other pressure forming methods include isostatic pressing, powder rolling, and powder extrusion. Slurry casting is a form of pressureless forming.

Sintering is a key process in powder metallurgy. The formed compact or compact can be sintered to obtain the required physical and mechanical properties. Sintering sub-unit system sintering and multi-system sintering. Regardless of the solid-phase sintering of the unit system or the multi-component system, the sintering temperature is lower than the melting point of the metal and alloy contained; while the liquid-phase sintering of the multi-component system is lower than the melting point of the refractory component, but higher than the melting point. The melting point of the ingredient. Generally, sintering is carried out under a protective atmosphere. In addition to common sintering methods, there are loose packing sintering, immersion method in which metal is infiltrated into sintered skeleton, hot pressing in combination of pressing and sintering, etc.
